Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Episode 4 Recap: Mer-made a Big Mis-cake

The last “Below Deck Sailing Yacht” episode ended with Cheffy Cloyce Martin galavanting in the Ibiza waters with the guests instead of prepping lunch for them. Captain Glenn Shephard is not happy and he’s yelling at Gary King to bring him back. However, Glenn is so mild-mannered that his yelling is more like a sharp bark. Canadians are so nice!

Speaking of unprofessional, deckhand Emma Crouch is sullenly smoking a ciggy and moping about how Gary criticized her for not following his instructions. “I’m hoping this is just a bad day and it gets smoother,” she says. Spoil alert: it doesn’t.

Back at the boat, Cloyce is scrambling to get lunch ready in 20 minutes but he’s grossly underprepared. He’s soon regretting his little excursion as he furiously whisks the sauce for the salmon and realizes that his chicken is slightly undercooked. Yum, salmonella.

The guests are waiting for their food and about to pass out from hunger. Thankfully, Cloyce brings out the dishes before dinnertime and they’re all saved from gnawing on each other’s limbs.

After lunch, Cloyce is getting ready for the primary’s 60th birthday dinner. He tells Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher that he got a loaf of nut cake from a nearby bakery and is going to jazz it up. It looks like a piece of brown bread with some sugary glaze on top.

Daisy looks dubious and asks how he’s going to elevate it and Cloyce suggests fresh fruit and whipped cream. Sure, that’ll make this ShopRite-looking cake fancy.

Cloyce’s cake is a poopy disaster

The “BDSY” crew has gone all out to make the primary’s 60th birthday special but behind the scenes, everything isn’t as smooth sailing. Daisy tells Danni Warren to tidy up the cabins and she immediately pushes back by saying she’s done housekeeping the whole time.

Diana Cruz and Dannie start arguing about who has done the cabins that day. Daisy is trying to be nice but what she needs to do is put her foot down and just tell the insubordinate stews to shape up or ship out.

In the galley, Cloyce is putting together his “cake” and pops it in the oven to warm it up and make it seem like he baked it. He’s not even ashamed of his lack of effort and tells the cameras, “I f*cking hate making cakes.” That’ll get you far!

As Cloyce takes the cake out of the oven, it immediately falls apart into a pile of mush. The stews stand around looking horrified but he tells them that he can save it.

“It looks like a pile of dog sh*t,” Daisy tells the cameras. “It’s horrific.” Meanwhile, the guests are sitting around waiting for dessert and Daisy tries to distract them by herding them to the dance party with the DJ.

Cloyce attempts to make the cake look pretty with a bunch of whipped cream around it. “No one has to know,” he says. How about all the “BDSY” viewers who have totally discredited your culinary skills?

The crew brings out the cake which is cut into small pieces and put on a plate so that no one can tell they’re falling apart under all the whipped cream.

At this point, hopefully, the guests are all wasted enough to not notice or not care. The primary goes to bed without touching her cake and the young ones stay up to party with the DJ.

In the cabins, Daisy is complaining to Emma about Cloyce’s cake disaster. Even Emma, who’s incompetent at everything, knows you can’t frost a cake fresh out of the oven.

The Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew is slacking

Daisy suggests getting some lime and lemon juice ready to have on hand and Diana asks what they use lime juice for. Um, margaritas? Too bad Diana doesn’t even know what goes into one even though it’s a universally requested drink all over the world.

Also, it’s not that complicated. There’s literally like four ingredients. This alarms Daisy and she suggests having the stews make the deck team drinks later just as a refresher.

Captain Glenn is docking the boat and Emma doesn’t know how to tie the stern line. It’s not tight enough and Gary is understandably frustrated because it’s boating 101.

The guests depart and Daisy fills Glenn in on Cloyce’s shortcomings. She wants to try to handle it but if it doesn’t work out, she wants Glenn’s support.

During the tip meeting, Glenn calls Cloyce out for galivanting in the ocean during work hours. “It’s a bit harsh. But I f*cked up,” he admits to the cameras. “It’s good to be humbled and it’s good to have a wake up call.”

Despite the chef’s shortcomings, the tip amounts to over $25,000 which is a pretty penny per crew member.

Daisy tells the deck crew that her stews will be taking drink orders and when the time comes, Diana makes Gary a half-hearted Bloody Mary and then stomps away. It’s her off time dammit and she doesn’t want to spend it making cockies for the crew.

Danni is the only one left at the bar and now she’s annoyed at being abandoned. Daisy was just trying to help her stews but they’re both too sensitive to take constructive criticism. “To be a yachtie, you need to have thick skin,” she says.

Emma Crouch spirals

The “Below Deck Sailing Yacht” stews aren’t the only ones having trouble adjusting to yacht life. After dinner, Emma is in the car with Diana, Danni, and deckhand Keith Allen. She asks Diana if she likes Gary and when the stew says she doesn’t, Emma doesn’t let up.

Diana insists she’s not into Gary and Emma proceeds to mock her as if she’s a helpless girl.

At the club, Danni and Diana tell Daisy what happened in the car. Daisy gets overprotective over her stews and asks Emma, “What the f*ck did you say to the girls in the taxi?”

Emma plays dumb and says, “They want to get all like petulant about it then I will just not relay any other information.” She sits down and Diana asks if she’s okay.

Emma then proceeds to yell at the two stews and inform them that she’ll never give them her opinion moving forward, not that anyone asked her to begin with. Drinks + Emma = MESS.
